Hemingway, Cleeves and Bosch

This has been a good reading week for me.

This week I posted A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway and Untold Paris by John Baxter.

When I was at the library I picked up The Dark Wives, the eleventh in her Vera series. The setting is Northumberland and Vera is investigating the murder of a young man who worked at a children's care home.  The children housed there are either troubled, orphaned or have a parent missing in their lives. Fourteen year old Chloe is missing and when the detectives find her diary, they wonder if she is the killer or if she is in danger and went into hiding.

Interesting article HERE about Ann Cleeves working as a social worker and how a radio programme about a few unscrupulous care homes inspired her to write this mystery.  Apparently there are some who run the care homes strictly as a business without regard to caring for teens in need of love, counseling and more. Yikes.

Next up is The Atlas of Abandoned Places. If you read and liked my post about Hidden Libraries by Lonely Planet, I think you would like this book. The photography is fantastic and the stories are equally engaging.  More on it later.

Watching / We have watched a season of Goliath and two seasons of Bosch. I also I have been watching a few baseball games using free access.  Can't bring myself to pay for MLB, so expensive.  I also keep track of the Phillies on my phone and they have had some great games, especially with the Red Sox going into extra innings two games in a row

    1. Ash, it was a pretty good one in the Vera series. And thanks but no, I'm not on any of that social media.

  3. When I was growing up I lived in Ohio. My brother in law took his 3 boys, my brother and I to all the Cincinnati Red games. After the game was over we'd go stand by the fence and all the players except for Johnny Bench would come over to talk to us and sign autographs for us. Bench didn't ever join us. When the game was over he headed straight for the locker room. Not a JB fan at all!

    1. Vicki, that's terrible about Bench! They forget it's the fans who back them. Bet that was fun seeing those games!

  4. We are Braves fans and it kind of feels like they don't want us to watch the games! Without cable it's almost impossible to easily watch the games - even with MLB there are location blackouts. I have Ann Cleeves on my reading list for fall and am really looking forward to reading the first Vera. Right now I'm reading as much fast paced candy bar type books to try and keep my brain engaged.

    1. Katherine, it stinks when they black out the games. I can find free games here and there but im.not paying over $200 a year. I know what you mean about reading to.keep the brain engaged!

    1. Erin, it's a very neat book. It highlights places all over the world. Some are in the US and would be worth a trip.

  6. We're Dodger fans, and my 92-year-old mom can tell you all the highlights of each game (she watches religiously). She knows all the players names and what position they play, and who's having a bad season, etc., etc. Since she no longer travels, her big splurge is on MLB and ESPN. She's also a Duke basketball fan, so all her travel money now goes to watching sports! My husband and I enjoy the playoff season and World Series, but I don't have the patience to watch a game, day after day.

    1. Les, that's great your mom is enjoying the games and impressive she knows all those stats! Growing up in Philly I remain a fan in spite of my exile in the south :-)

  8. The Atlas of Abandoned Places looks fabulous! We always watched the Yankees growing up. I somehow became a rabid Mets fan in the 80s, but have gradually settled back into a casual Yankees fan. There is a real Yankees/Red Sox divide in CT... they've actually discovered that the switch in loyalty lies just east of New Haven.

    1. JoAnn, I bet that can be fun watching a game up there. I'd have to travel a ways but I can keep up via the phone and some on TV

  9. I hope you enjoyed the Bosch series. We were a bit addicts of the show years earlier and finished all the seasons. Now we are watching a spinoff Bosch show called Ballard. I haven't been following baseball this season but I just looked and the Blue Jays are actually first in their division! What a surprise. I will need to tune in now. The Phillies look in contention. And someday I need to try a Cleeves book. Happy reading.

    1. Susan, we are up to season 4 now. Took a break after season 3 to start Person of Interest with Jim Caviezel and it's pretty good. We plan on watching Ballard too.

    1. Joy, I guess they wrapped up the tv show thne? I was wondering if this would be her final Vera book. I miss Holly in the books.

  11. Anything to do with baseball is expensive now---it used to be a sport everyone could enjoy. I don't like to think that people are so awful that they run care homes as a business not to help others, but I seem to know little about the way people think now.

    1. Deb, you are so correct about baseball and trying to watch being expensive. I keep track on my phone as I have done for years. As for the care homes under investigation there was a tv show about it, probably BBC. It's a shame that the kids who needed guidance and help ended up in one of those.

  12. Since you and I like the same books, I must give Vera another try! John loves Bosch, and is in fact re-watching it at the moment.
Baseball is just too expensive, our Blue Jays are doing great at the moment, but it is driving the ticket prices through the roof, literally!

    1. Jackie, I have read all the Vera books. Will say I didn;t love this as much as others but it was decent. Did you read any with Holly in them? I liked her detective role in the series.
Damn, baseball IS expensive! I just catch news on my phone and watch a free game when it's available.
