New books on the horizon

Hello my bookish friends!  How was your week? I've been fortunate to have some great titles available to me and had some good reading time.

Posted this week - my first nonfiction of the year Daughters of the Bamboo Grove

New books on the horizon - I picked up this month's issue of BookPage and found some good books coming out later this year.

A new Maggie O'Farrell and Ann Patchett book will go on my holds list as soon as they are published. The titles are Land and Whistler, respectively.  Also I saw Tana French has a new book coming out but I am not a fan of her Cal Hooper series so I will pass,  That said, I love Tana's writing and very much miss the Dublin Murder Squad series.  Hoping the next book she writes will go back to that series...hopeful but doubtful.

Currently reading / Subpar Planet by Amber Share.  A humorous nonfiction about celebrated landmarks and disappointed visitors.

Watching/  I don't remember who posted about this show but we recently watched Ambassadors and it was enjoyable. Some comedy and  drama about  the British ambassadors to fictional Asian country Tajbekistan.   One of the actors is Keely Haws who we recognized from two other British shows -  Mrs. Wilson and Line of Duty

I hope you had a wonderful week with good books.  What are you reading or watching this week? Suggestions are always welcome and appreciated.

  1. Subpar Planet is not available at our library. I too enjoy Tana's Dublin Squad series. I will give her new one a try. We just watched two British series, Screw and Cuffs which we enjoyed.

    1. Jackie, I had not heard of Screw and Cuffs, will check it out. Oh please bring back the Dublin Murder Squad! Especially Cassie, loved her in The Likeness.

  2. I have finished several books this year, but no nonfiction YET. I am in the middle of several...which is probably why I haven't finished one yet.

  3. I love Tana French's early books and have thought about re-reading them... maybe this year or next. We're currently watching The Game (on Britbox). It has the actor from McDonald and Dobbs, and is very good. Only 4 episodes, which is kind of nice. Currently reading The Eights, Winds of War, and The Emperor of All Maladies. Anything to drown out the awful news that has made 2026 seem just as bad as 2025. Sigh.

    1. Les, we don't have Britbox but may add it after we run through some of the Apple tv shows. I don't want to subscribe to too much but there are shows I would like so I make a list.
I am not familiar with the titles you are reading but will look at those on Goodreads. Oh yes, the Dublin Murder Squad series was so good. Which was your favorite? I am torn between The Likeness and Broken Harbor.

    2. I would say The Likeness is probably my favorite. I'm definitely planning to reread that one this year. It's in my stack!

    3. Maybe we can read it together? :-)

    4. That would be fun! Maybe in a few months or this summer?

    5. That works for me! Are you going to start with In the Woods or just read The Likeness? I was always hoping they would bring Cassie back in later books.

  4. I haven't read any memoirs yet this year, though I've joined the Immigration Reading Challenge and the Japanese Reading Challenge.

  5. I haven’t seen Book Page before, is it a magazine?
I requested a print ARC of Land but I’m not sure I’ll get it. It’s on my #TTT list for tomorrow

Wishing you a happy reading week.

    1. Shelleyrae, BookPage is a monthly publication our libraries have available free of charge. It's a paper booklet with suggestions for fiction, childrens, nonfiction, mysteries, etc. Plus author interviews. You can get it online free as well. But i like the paper version.

  6. My library system spent the last two months updating their cataloging system, and I've been waiting and waiting to put in new holds. My wishlist that I kept there was lost in the transition, so now I'm trying to remake that list. I know that I will be happy when I get to know the new system better.

We have not settled into a series right now, and that's frustrating. One of my wishlists at the library was for series and movies available to borrow there.

    1. Deb, that's awful they don't have some recovery system for patrons' accounts and holds. I am not sure i could remember all on my wish list or holds list. Ugh,.

  7. I like to look over anticipated books coming out and Patchett's and O'Farrell's sound promising. I have not read Tana French yet, though I think I own a couple of hers as ebooks. I feel I'm still reading a bit from 2025. And what will Shannon Bowring write next after her final in the trilogy? hmm. Cheers.

    1. Susan, my husband and i are big fans of Tana French but not her Cal Hooper series. Les is wanting to reread The Likeness this year and maybe a buddy read is in order.

My long list for 2025 was not accomplished in spite of reading quite a bit. Every time a new librarry hold came in a planned book would take the back seat.

  8. BookPage sounds helpful! I also like bookreporter.com and fantasticfiction.com for insight into books publishing later in the year.

  9. I need to give Tana French another try. I love her writing but I didn't love how open ended the first book in the Dublin Murder Squad ended. I'll have to try The Ambassadors. It's always fun to see just how many different shows British actors end up in. Mrs. Wilson was one of my absolute favorites - what a crazy story!

    1. Katherine, I read why she didn't wrap up what went down with Rob. Check that out on Goodreads in her question/answer section. She felt it would be bad to explain what happened to him as a child, he needed to tell it, but it was traumatic enough that he couldn;t . She explained it better.

I loved The Likeness. Funny thing too, I started with book 3 Faithful Place because i saw it was a detective book set in reland at Barnes and Noble. I started reading and then discovered there were 2 previous books. Ha!

  10. That's great to see some new books coming from British and Irish authors. Ambassadors looks fun!

    1. Joy, you may like Ambassadors and I was sorry they canceled it after three episodes. Just a good blend of comedy and drama. Very much looking forward to O'Farrell and hoping Tana will write anither book for next year.
