Flowers

Hello folks.  I've been awfully lax about visiting and commenting and posting.  Allergies have kicked my ass but as I don't particpate in too many blog activities, no biggie.

This is how the seedlings and planting are going so far.

Salvia makes a brilliant statement with vibrant purple flowers on stalks.

Once we removed some overgrown neglected roses I could put in black-eyed Susans, allysum, coreopsis, purple hearts and my steadfast spider plants.

We did keep the roses on the trellis against the house, got them trimmed up nicely.

I also wanted to share a photo of a pond at a local park so you can see how much pollen accumulates here.  No wonder I had been living on Flonase and Allegra.   Isn't it gross?  Yes, the yellow is all pollen and it coats our patio, cars and even the poor turtles in the pond had yellow on their shells.  It's a real dream living in Florida.

As for book news I have finished a few books, abandoned one and made my goal list for the next 2 months for some nonfiction and historical fiction.  Reviews upcoming here or on Goodreads.

That's it.  I just wanted to post.

  1. What pretty flowers ... love the colors, the pink & purple. I hope your allergies are under control ... all that pollen yikes. I'm sure I would be a mess. How can you garden with all that yellow covering everything? I just checked the weather here ... I'll send you a snowball on Thursday ... it might help.

    1. Susan, yea for the allergies being under control. Now I know what mmed combo to use next year. I am also loving the flowers and bringing color to the front of the house. Yes, please to the offer of a snowball!

  2. Your flowers are beautiful and I'm glad you were able to save the trellis with roses. The colors are stunning! That's a pretty impressive amount of pollen on the pond - no wonder you are suffering! It hasn't been anywhere near that bad here, but my daughter was relieved to get back to NYC. Her allergies always bother her here. I'll have plenty of catch-up gardening to do when we get back to CT.

    1. JoAnn, thanks so much! There are two trellis on either side of the front window. Those roses were out of control and Doug cut them back, they came back beautifully. The roses in the front were very old and very neglected so they came out and I put in lots of flowers. Some of the branches of those roses were as big as my wrist with huge thorns.
The pollen is incredible here. Not sure if this combo will work for your daughter but Allegra and Flonse got me through the worst of it.

  3. Love all the flower photos--salvia is one of my favorites--so hardy and reliable and such lovely deep, rich colors. I have salvia scattered throughout my various garden beds and it is so reliable. I'm also a big fan of black-eyed susans, for many of the same reasons that I love salvia. Your rose trellis is lovely.

Our outdoor furniture is coated in pollen, but it is snowing today (YAY!), so that will dampen down everything for awhile.

Best wishes for an end to allergy season!

    1. Jane, salvia has such lovely blooms. But this purple one seems to shimmer. I try and plant flowers to attract butterflies and bees. Also keep a plant saucer out with little rocks and keep it filled with water for bees to replenish their bodies.

Snow! Wow, I was just reading the news about the snowstorm coming in.

  4. I would love to have some of that beautiful purple salvia. My sister had lots at her house before she moved to Central Texas.

Pollen is bad here. My poor husband suffers every day.

    1. Deb, everyone is different on which OTC meds work but I found Allegra did the trick. I also tried Claritan and Benadryl but those didn;t work for me. Good luck to your husband enduring this season. I think ours has, thankfully, passed.

You could grow salvia as we are in the same plant zone. I highly recommend purple and red.

  5. Hey!!! I think the purple stalks growing in the flower bed of my apartment building is that Salvia stuff!!! If I can remember, I'll take a picture of it.

That is definitely a lot of pollen and I never knew Florida has all that pollen-y stuff!
