Here is a sobering thought and good advice.
Basically just do whatever you have been meaning to do but had put off for whatever reason. Today makes my 70th trip around the sun. Wow, where did all those years go?
That old saying "so many books, so little time" has more meaning for me now and I am definitely prioritizing the books I want to read. As I love making a list I will select three books to read from my shelves/kindle and a new one I've had my eye on for a short term goal.
One book I very much want is Valerie Perrin's latest set for publication June 23. It was published in French a while back but I am awaiting Hildegard Serle's translation to English.
Next up from my shelf, in no particular order are the following.
Hotline by Dimitri Nasrallah
The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy (from my classics list)
Beneath the Water by Sarah Painter
Tata by Valerie Perrin - ok, not currently owned.
Unknown - A possibilty from my classics list or a buddy read.
*This list does not include my library holds of some very cool books I am looking forward to getting this summer. You know...Patchett, O'Farrell, Toibin among others.
I think I will post that list next as it's extensive. How many holds does your library allow? Mine has a limit of about 50 books, I think. Not that I'd ever try and check out that many!
What else is new here...I made English Muffin Toasting Bread from a recipe from the King Arthur website. Recipe HERE. Makes excellent toast.
Haircut accomplished

Happy, happy Birthday!! That's certainly a quote worth pondering. "Do it while you can" has been my mother's motto for a long time. I like your list of books.. and immediately thought of you when I heard about Tata! It's finally dawning on me that I will never read all books and it's time to do a better job prioritizing what I really want to read. (Sorry your birthday card is arriving late!)
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, thank you so much! That is a quote to think about. Puts your priorities in perspective.
DeleteYou remembered I like Valerie Perrin :-) I've been on the fence about preordering and hoping the library will get the book. That said, it's just under 600 pages so I'd rather have it on Kindle. Part of me says, don't be cheap and the other part says wait....it will go on sale for Kindle. Not like I don't have books to read!
Wishing you a very happy birthday, Tina!! I hope you have a wonderful time celebrating.
ReplyDeleteThat English Muffin bread looks divine. My husband would love it, as would I. Thanks for linking to the recipe.
Great haircut, by the way!
Les, Thanks so much for the good wishes and liking my haircut, I appreciate it. Oh the English Muffin bread is so good for toast. I recommend it. Coming over to your blog to see your onthly roundup,
DeleteTina, Happy Birthday week! May the celebrations begin. And that bread looks good. Although I'm reading mainly new releases this summer ... I think by fall I want to try some classics .... and wonder about taking on the classic challenge. Hmm. So many I need to get to. Hope you like these reads!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan, thank you for the birthday wishes ! We had chicken marsala last night and I picked the movie we watched. Spent time with Doug and Loki, spoke to our son for an hour and half and read quite a bit of The Midnight Train by Matt Haig. I may make my summer reading list from all my library holds and interject these books posted above.
DeleteHappy birthday! I'm a big fan of birthdays and like to do all my favorite things for the month. You've got some good books coming up. I really want to read something by Valerie Perrin and I'm intrigued by the classics you've got going. My reading has been really slow lately so I'm trying to lean into more escapist and fast paced reads for a bit. The bread looks yummy! I have good luck with King Arthur's recipes and I love their flours. I'll have to try that one.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Katherine! Today I finished The Midnight Train and so I will start Hotline tonight or tomorrow. I wanted to pick just a few I own as I have a massive holds list at the library.
DeleteI am a Valerie Perrin fangirl and have read three of the books translated to English. My first was Fresh Water for Flowers.
Oh yes, King Arthur rocks! I use it exclusively and usually make baguettes.
Happy Birthday!!! I hope all the books you picked are 5 stars and your hair looks great!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jinjer. I don't usually make a deal of the birthday but this is a big one, and a big number, lol. So far I have had great luck with books and am pplanning a summer reading list from my library holds.
DeleteHappy Birthday!! I have a few more orbits than you!!
ReplyDeleteI have 1,865 holds and we can have 5,000! Perrin is a new author to me, so I have now added to my holds!!
Thank you, Jackie! Wow, that's a huge number of holds! I like the suspend feature we have, if I get too many about to come in I can suspend the hold but keep my place in line.
DeleteValérie Perrin is an author I enjoy and have read Fresh Water for Flowers, Three and Forgotten on Sunday. But I always need to wait on the English translation.
I had no idea your birthday was today so I added it to my "Birthday's list on my phone. Happy Birthday!! Love your hair and that bread looks yummy!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vicki! I like making bread and this was one I'd meant to make for a while. It's good to see you bloggng again.
DeleteHappy birthday!
ReplyDeleteWe can have 20 holds and I think 50 books out. Years ago I was constantly juggling my library books so that I could pick up the next one. These days I begin to feel pressure if I have more than about 20 out!
I have that Valerie Perrin book to read over the coming weeks...if I get to it!
Marg, thanks very much. It was certainly a milestone birthday. I am definitely going to check how many I can have out at a time when I go insode the library again. I can only take about 4 books to tackle and usually put the others on a suspension, keeping my place in line.
DeleteCan't wait to hear what you think of the Perrin book. Have you read her others?
Happy Birthday! It's definitely a gift to ourselves when we read what we love.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joy. Through reading I can armchair travel, learn new things and enjoy new authors as well as favorites. Win-win.
DeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎈🎂 I hope the celebration of you is spectacular.
ReplyDeleteIt’s lovely to see your smiling face, and your haircut looks great.
We are only allowed to have eight books on reserve, which is halfish of the 15 we are allowed to borrow at one time. To be fair there usually isn’t much of a queue.
Thanks for sharing your week
Thanks much, Shelleyrae! It was a fun day and I was able to get my eggplant sub (a favorite) and have some of this thick hair shorn. Funny to read the differences in libraries elsewhere and their book limits. Ours also has a limt of 10 holds for Kindle books. That said, there is a Wishlist feature and you can save unlimted books there and just move them to holds once you check one out.
DeleteHappy Birthday, Tina! 50 books? That’s a lot. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Olivia! Fifty books is a lot but I would never bring home that many!
DeleteI love your haircut. You have such wise advice about making good use of time. I shall ban worrying and spending time on things I have no control over, I think. I want to spend my remaining days enjoying this beautiful world and the beautiful people on it. Happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm curious about Hotline.
DeleteThanks so much, Deb. With this heat it's a bit cooler to keep my hair shorter. I'd asked my hairdresser if my hair would ever turn completely silver or white and not just all the streaks (both big and small) and she said it's possible I'd have some brown forever. I'd rather it just go white, one color!
DeleteYou should absolutely seize the days and enjoy life!
