In my previous post I talked about making some short term goals and listing a few books I have on hand. It's working well for me as I have finished two books I own. One fiction and the other a nonfiction.
After reading Cecile Pin's book Celestial Lights I found myself a fan of her writing style. As I own Wandering Souls I thought I'd start with that one on Kindle.
This is the story of a family, broken apart while fleeing Vietman after the war ended.
I can't imagine the fear and obstacles of leaving your country, grasping at an escape so scary, possibly unreliable smugglers transporting you and loved ones..... hoping it will be safe. Hoping to escape horrid living conditions in exchange for a good life.
The story is told with multiple narrators.
"Because Anh, Minh Thanh were the 3 oldest children, their parents decided they would travel ahead on a separate boat, dividing the family in two. It hadn't occurred to Anh that this breaking in half was the first sign of peril. The first clue that her father knew that one of the halves might fall."
When Anh's parents and siblings don't arrive when planned she knows things went wrong. Now at 16 years of age she is the care taker of her younger brothers. She must keep them safe and fed while living with uncertainties in resettlement camps.
In between her story and viewpoint are passages from the deceased brother named Dao. Seeing his sister and brothers from a ghostly existence. Sounds odd but it worked, especially in explanations about their culture.

Next on my list was Hayley Arceneaux's book Wild Ride. A Memoir of I.V. Drips and Rocket Ships.

Great job on getting 2 books off your shelf in the first month of the year! I'm really focusing on audio books right now because Audible Plus got rid of pretty much all the books I wanted to listen to so I'm finishing off the few I have left before I cancel my Audible account. I hope Loki is okay and that your bloodwork has good results. Beef stew is the perfect comfort food for this weather! I bought a few jars of Rao's soup last week just in case we lost power in the storm so we've been eating a LOT of soup!
ReplyDeleteKatherine, it really worked for me to make a sjort list so I will try that again after I catch up on the new library holds.
DeleteLoki is fine now. He has these weird episodes when he gets stressed. He looks like he's blind, hovers close to the floor with his tail tucked and wanders around frantically. When it's done he vomits. What set him off was I just disappeared. I left early while everyone was sleeping to get my bloodwork done and he awakened to me being gone. He doesn't do it when we leave and he knows we have left....just disappearing was a mistake. Poor Doug - he didn't have time for coffee before that happened!
I hope you didn't lose power, now is not the time to be without. It's very cold here and I imagine you have the freezing temps as well. Bummer about the audible. I can't listen to books but I know there are many fans of it.
Congrats on accomplishing your goal! Thanks for sharing your Nonfiction Reader Challenge read.
ReplyDeleteShelleyrae, I have another book in mind for the memoir category so I put this nonfiction under Grazer. Yes, making a list is working!!
DeleteI like have monthly goals, and have done well with them for over a year now. Wandering Souls sounds like a heartbreaking story! I may give it a try on audio once I've read Celestial Lights. Thanks again for sending that one to me! (Snail mail en route!) I love the cover art for Midwinter Break. I've been to Amsterdam once and would like to return for a longer visit. I'm eager to hear your thoughts on this book once you're finished. I like books featuring older adults, too. Great minds think alike--I'm making stew for dinner tomorrow night. It's a favorite in our home.
ReplyDeleteLes, I will certainly keep up with monthly goals as it's working. I did get some library books in but I will come back to the list after those. The cover art and description of Midwinter Break caught my attention. It moves sloooooow though. I'll get a post up about it and may try another of MacLaverty's books but I'm not in a hurry. He's apparently a great author and maybe it's just that this one seems so slow. But I do like it.
DeleteBeef stew is always good for chilly nights, We do think alike :-)
It's good you're reading books from your own shelves. I need to do that. I liked your expanded review of Wandering Souls on GR. I had to go back to see what I thought of it from last year and reread my review at https://www.thecuecard.com/movies/pucks-and-neighbors/ . It does make some jumps within it but it is a moving story. I look forward to hearing more about Midwinter Break. And the cover to Crux is pretty. chat soon.
ReplyDeleteSusan, I will probably start a fiction from the shelf after we read Crux. Thank you, about the review for Wandering Souls. It captivated me and the abuse of the boat people appalled me. What a scary period in their lives to try and escape a war torn country and be taken advantage of. Ugh.
DeleteOff to look at your review.
Well done with your monthly goals, especially getting two books off your tbr shelf! They look like good reads, too. Midwinter Break sounds good and I'll look forward to your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, picking six books is an attainable goal for me. Just finished Midwinter Break and will write about it. It's very slow with the minutia of a couples travel and conversation.
DeleteYou have it cold in Sanibel! I saw snow flurries yesterday. Wearer on Florida, right?
Woo hoo! Great job on the reading goals! Beef stew sounds so good right now!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jinjer! You are also welcome to have a bowl of beef stew :-)
DeleteThis represents a nice variety of books! That's great that some are helping you meet your reading goals.
ReplyDeleteJoy, it's been good crosiing off goals in my notebook!
