Monday Mailbox

My library books came in sooner than expected.  Here's what I got.

Four Lost Cties is a nonfiction by science journalist Annalee Newitz exploring the rise and fall of four ancient cities. I'm particularly interested in Pompeii as well as the indigenous metropolis Cahokia near the Mississippi River, where St. Louis stands today.

Crux by Gabriel Tallent is fiction, a buddy read planned with Susan at The Cue Card. This is a coming of age book about friendship, challenges and the realities of adult life and responsibilties.

Also picked up the latest issue of BookPage, a free publication I enjoy browsing through.  You can get it online but I like the old school paper version.

There are many articles of interest in here as well as upcoming publications in all genres for your interest. I was particularly interested in this bit about Allegra Goodman's new book This is Not About Us.  It's labeled as literary fiction and a family drama, which I like.

Did you get any books this week? I am still planning on working on my to-read list but interjecting the library haul on these chilly days spent indoors.  Still working on my short term reading goals as well.

Monday Mailbox is hosted by Vicki at I'd Rather Be at the Beach.

Check out Monday Mailbox to see who linked up this week.

  1. Crux sounds like a good read. I'll be anxious to hear how you and Susan like it. I've not read Allegra Goodman, but her new book sounds promising, too.

I plan to start in on Tana French's In the Woods (re-read) in another week or so, if you want to join me. I'm pushing The Likeness into March...

    1. Les, I started Crux and while the teen banter isn't my cup of tea, the story unfolding has me intrigued. The Allegra Goodman book being a family drama is something I will enjoy, I like books like that.

I'm good to start the Tana book with you...just give me about 5 days warning so I'm not reading something else. Just saw the Classic Club announced their spin so I hope to read something off that list.

  3. Crux looks good - will look forward to hearing what you think. I'll have to visit the library this week to get the latest BookPage. It's such a great publication! BTW, there is a goodreads giveaway for Allegra Goodman's new novel that is still open.

I just got Ocean Vuong's The Emperor of Gladness from the library and sampled the first few pages - LOVE the writing.

    1. JoAnn, sometimes I want the paper version of book review publications. The online version is nice, and I subscribe, but I like picking that BookPage up at the library. Thanks for the heads up for the Allegra Goodman book. I entered to win, fingers crossed.
Thank you also for the mention of Ocean Vuong's book. I think I may like to read that as well. Look forward to your thoughts.

    2. Chiming in here to say that I'm super glad to hear that you are enjoying Vuong's book, JoAnn. That's one that's been on my radar for a while, but I read one negative review and thought I'd wait a while. Keep us posted!

    3. Les - Vuong's writing is absolutely gorgeous, which makes sense since he's a poet. I also didn't know the books is set in CT - a plus for me. I've seen negative reviews too, but several trusted book friends loved it. I've read 25 pages and will keep going for now.

    4. So maybe print instead of audio, so I can appreciate the writing, right?

    5. I think so, though if the library has the audio available I will try and get that, too.

  4. The Pompeii part will be fascinating. I hope the nonfiction book is enjoyable. I have been in the city all day so I'm behind (already) on our read start for today of Crux. Sigh. I'm a bit exhausted but will try to rebound tomorrow. The surgeon seemed ok with my knee but made me a followup appointment in late March. So I'll continue on with all the bending exercises. We don't seem to get BookPage here in hardcopy but I get a bulletin each week from BookMarks. Do you know that one?

    1. Susan, I made some progress with the book and I think I'm up to the next section, a break titled Intersection. I'll email in a bit.
That's great news the surgeon is happy with the progress for your knee. It must be draining though, the constant exercises for it.

I have not heard of BookMarks but i am going to search for it now.

  5. L.A. Public Library system has billions of magazines but BookPage is not one of them. Why??? Did I get any books this week? Yes. Two "jump the line" popped onto my Libby app to join the other 20 books I already have checked out to my Kindle. Stop the madness!!!

Four Lost Cities sounds gooooooood. You can apply that to 2026 Nonfiction Reader Challenge: Lost or Found category!

    1. Jinjer, that's brilliant - the Lost or Found category! I was having trouble thinkning of what book would fit that category.
I also have a load of Kindle books checked out. I don't turn the WiFi on the Kindle so I can read them after the due date. Puts some motivation in what I read next.

  7. The weather is sunny today, and I think I will ride my bike to our library. It's always a good day when books come in for me there.

I hope you enjoy your buddy read and Four Lost Cities sounds like a book I might like to read.

    1. Deb, riding a bike to the library sounds fun and you just made me realize, I don't own a bike. But I am close enough to the library to make that happen. I will need a basket for the books!
