Best Dog in the World: Essays on Love

The Best Dog in the World: Essays on Love is a wonderful collection of stories from authors about their dogs. Some will make you cry and some make you laugh and read aloud to share with the other dog person in the room.

The contributing authors are listed at the end of the book along with a short bio and some of their publications.  I found that helpful as I am always on the lookout for new titles.

The story about the greyhound adoption had me laughing and Bonnie Garmus nailed that story.  And the Petco adoption event by Trigiani was interesting to read as the daughter just knew which dog would be the best fit for her.  All of the stories are good and this little book would make an excellent gift for any dog lover.  It's a tribute to our canine companions and the unconditional love and devotion they give us as they in turn, enrich our lives.

  1. This sounds wonderful. You've convinced me that I NEED to read this book! I still think about Zelda, our greyhound, almost daily - she was the sweetest dog.

    1. JoAnn, I bet the library has this one. The forward is written by Alice Hoffman and I never realized she had such a lonely upbringing. It was sad but so wonderful when she got a dog and connected, found unconditional love.

I thought of you and Zelda when I read Garmus' story about adopting their greyhound rescue. Actually wanted to ask if it was true greyhounds can't sit, only lie down or stand.

    2. Tina - Yes, I put in a library hold. I'm wondering if it would be good on audio, too.

Zelda could not sit and I think that's true for most greyhounds. Winnie (my grand-whippet) has been trained to sit, but she only weighs 25 pounds.I suppose it would be more difficult for larger, heavier greyhounds.

  2. Yep I'll check the library. I'm curious to read about these writers & their dogs ... especially Strout, Ann Leary, & Bonnie Garmus, and Zigman. Both Bonnie & Laura Zigman put dogs in big roles in their novels : Lessons in Chemistry and Separation Anxiety, so you can see they're dog people. Yay. This collection seems addicting and fun. Glad you liked it.

  4. This sounds like a good book though I suspect it would make me cry. Dog stories always do! We had a retired racing greyhound for a few months (fostering) and it was the craziest thing. It was like living with a fairly affectionate deer who every once in a while would do laps in the back yard.
