Hello all. I've been slacking on visiting and blogging but it doesn't mean I haven't been thinking about you...just distracted. Honest. 💗
Last week I wrote up a post about my last category in the 2026 Nonfiction Reading Challenge here. Getting ready to firm up my completion post for that challenge. I've been loving nonfiction this year more than ever. Much thanks to Shelleyrae for hosting and giving us good suggestions for nonfiction.
New books coming out / I am a subscriber to Kate Morton's newsletter and received the great news she is publishing a new book. Yea! It's called Christabel set to come out early next year.
Also learned Peter Heller has one coming out called The Far Blue, also set to publish early next year.
Books with older characters / Recently I read an article about books featuring older characters and thought I would share that here. Some I've read, some I plan to read.
Some books featured in this article are:

That's a great photo of the rabbit! Wow.
ReplyDeleteI have a list of books with older women, but rather than share those titles here, I'm going to put together a post with photos of the cover art. Stay tuned!
Les, I definitely will stay tuned! I don't know how to do cool photo collages as Blogspot has done format where I can't manipulate them so you can see the entire covers. Looking forward to your post..
DeleteI do like older characters and throw in an ensemble cast and I'm even more excited. I also really like the list of books you've included. I've read the first Thursday Murder Club book and liked it but didn't love it though I suspect it was mood related. I'm so excited that Kate Morton is publishing another book! It's been far too long since her last one. Can't wait - and now I can finally read the one I've been holding out on because it's the last book of hers I haven't read.
ReplyDeleteKatherine, I may be the last of my book blogger friends who hasn't read the Thursday Murder Club book. I will have to move that up on my list. Kate Morton writes so slowly but I love her books. I always wonder if I will live long enough to read the next one, haha. Whicj one are you saving to read?
DeleteYou should make a Goodreads list or make a Top Ten Tuesday post for books with older characters. That's something I like in books. The Story of Arthur Truluv is on my wishlist. One book I thought was excellent was Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont.
ReplyDeleteDeb, I apprecaite the suggestions for those books. Will add to my list. Maybe Goodreads would be a good place for the list. Thanks for the idea!
DeleteI really like books with older protagonists, too, and have read many of the books mentioned here. Deb's idea of a Goodreads list of TTT post is a good one... I might have to do one soon.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, you can take the books on my list here for a top ten Tuesday, if you'd like. I won't do a post...maybe the Goodreads list but I won't post a TTT.
DeleteI also like the older characters as I am one myself now, lol
I’m glad you continue to enjoy the Nonfiction Reader Challenge
ReplyDeleteI also enjoy books with more mature age characters, I’ve read quite a few you’ve listed here. There are 3 Australian authors who almost always centre older characters in their contemporary fiction- Liz Byrski, Tricia Stringer and Joanna Nell. Up To No Good by Helen Torston has just been released and it’s a collection of the Swedish novellas starting with An Elderly Lady is Up To No Good, there’s also Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg‘s Little Old Lady series. That’s all I can think of from the top of my head.
Shelleyrae, this year has been the best for me as far as nonfiction. So many interesting books came my way and have inspired a list of other titles for the future.
DeleteThank you for the suggestions for the older characyer books. I will add them to this post.
Oh my goodness that rabbit is so sweet! I love the little star!!
ReplyDeleteErin, I love seeing this one and while there are others that occasionally accompany white star, this one is more bold in approaching the house.
DeleteCute photo of the bunny. Reminds me of the Hare book: Raising Hare, Sweet story. Great to hear of the Morton & Heller books coming, woohoo. And I like old protagonists (lol the older I get). You have a good list of books with them. I'm drawing a blank on others: all I can think of is Sybil in The Correspondent, who was feisty. Maybe the book & movie of Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf .... pretty good.
ReplyDeleteHI Susan, these rabbits are great entertainment. One time we had four big ones in the backyard, lounging and nibbling grass. It's usually just one at a time but the gathering was great.
DeleteYes, I am excited about both Morton and Heller books. I've read all of their books.
I want to read more of the books with older characters as I can fit them in. Les has a good post about older characters in books as well.
Great list of books! I liked the Simonson and the Joyce books. Some of these others definitely sounds like books to consider! I like books with older characters, too.
ReplyDeleteJoy, Thank you. The Simonson books was a very good one.
DeleteI have mixed feelings about Peter Heller--I've really enjoyed some of his books, but the dystopian stuff is a non-starter for me. This one looks really good, though--love a good man-against-the-elements story.
ReplyDeleteBooks with older characters--yes, we boomers are coming into our own in the book world. Richard Osman books are great--yes, Thursday Murder is a wonderful series. Rosamunde Pilcher often wrote sympathetically of older characters, probably as she aged herself!
What truly bugs me is when authors label someone in their 60s as old--a prime example was in Murder Takes a Vacation where author Laura Lippman was adamant that a 68 year old woman was old. Muriel may have been 68, but she was far from old!
Hi Jane, I will have to try that Tursday Murder series. It's quite popular and our library has many copies.
DeleteOh yeah, I love that 68 is labeled as old! I'm okay with the old label though...perspective I suppose.
What a wonderful list, Tina — I've added several of these to my to-read pile, especially The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and The Thursday Murder Club. The news about Kate Morton's Christabel is so exciting, and that rabbit visitor photo is absolutely adorable! I came across a lovely round-up of cosy reader gifts at onc brothers that would pair perfectly with these titles.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I had forgotten to mention the followupto Hardold Fry here, the one about Queenie Hennessey who Harold went to see.
