A Few of the Girls by Maeve Binchy

As Maeve Binchy died in 2012 I was quite surprised, yet delighted, to see a new book available at the library.  The forward is written by her husband Gordon Snell.  He explains how she would type up a storm and get her thoughts out, never once seeing her staring at a blank page as she searched for inspiration.

As a big fan of Ms. Binchy I grabbed a copy and settled in to read the short stories.  I will say I prefer her novels more than this collection and these stories are dated in the narrative of how women defer to men.

That said, this is a book of stories about friendships and relationships.  Some show how women support one another and others where women stand up for themselves. If you haven't read Binchy before I would not start with this collection as her novels are much better.  I have read all of her books and Light a Penny candle remains my very favorite.

  1. I've only read 2 books by this author, Finding Frankie & Scarlet Feather. I remember Finding Frankie and loved it, but didn't remember anything about Scarlet Feather and even when I looked it up I still don't remember it.

  2. I think I've only read one book by Maeve Binchy but I absolutely loved it. It was Week in Winter which I know a lot of people didn't love but it was one of those right time right book books. I love Rosamunde Pilcher's short stories but they frequently have a similar dated feel so I know just what you mean.
Your comment on my Friday Fives made me laugh. I think I found the Turkish soap opera through Instagram reels. I know that's what got me hooked on it but why it started showing it to me is beyond me since I don't speak Turkish. You should have seen Jason's face when I told him I had subscribed to WatchTurkish though! He was completely baffled.

  3. I've read her Circle of Friends and Tara Road. I wouldn't mind reading more...

  4. I'm not sure if I've read Maeve Binchy. If I did, it was before I was recording books on my blog or in Goodreads.

  5. I read a lot of Maeve Binchy when I was a teenager, but it has been a long time since I have.
