This is my first time participating in Nonfiction November although I do participate in an annual nonfiction challenge at Book'd Out.
Our host for the first week here is Heather at Based on a True Story.
Week 1 (10/27 – 11/2) Your Year in Nonfiction: Celebrate your year of nonfiction. What books have you read? What were your favorites? Have you had a favorite topic? Is there a topic you want to read about more? What are you hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November?
So far this year I have read thirteen nonfiction books with various topics such as Food, Health, Travel, Garden, Myths/Legends and Memoir/Biography. I am about to start The Art Thief by Michael Finkel which is true crime, also a buddy read with Susan at The Cue Card.
Favorites / One of my absolute favorite for 2025 is The Story of a Heart by Dr. Rachel Clarke. That book could well have landed under the science category but I chose health.
Here is a list of the nonfiction completed so far in 2025.
Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter
Be Ready When Luck Happens by Ina Garten
On the Hippie Trail by Rick Steves
Vanishing Cornwall by Daphne du Maurier
The Day the World Came to Town by Jim DeFede
What I Ate in One Year by Stanley Tucci
The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan
Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain
The Shepherd's Life by James Rebanks
I have been reading nonfiction all year as I participate in Shelleyrae's Nonfiction Reading Challenge . You can find more about this annual challenge at Book'd Out.
Sharing with the hosts Heather at Nonfiction November and Readerbuzz.
UPDATE - I am not on Facebook and can not sign in to participate in the link on Heather's blog. So...yeah.

I'm looking forward to this reading challenge. It's one of my favorites! I haven't read that many nonfiction books this year (maybe 6?), but I have over a dozen stacked up for November. My post goes live tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to look for a copy of The Story of a Heart since you've raved about it a few times. I also want to read The Day the World Came to Town. It's been on my mental tbr list forever!
Les, I just read them year round when I am motivated toward a particular book. Looking at what I have read, and what I seem to have around the house for upcoming reads, it appears I favor memoirs more than others. Hope you like Story of the Heart. It explains how some medical inventions came to be as well as the amazing heart transplant story.
DeleteYou have completed a good list of nonfiction this year! From your list, I particularly want to read the Cotter dog book, Rachel Clarke's book, and of course I need to get to the Backyard Bird Chronicles which I received for Christmas last year (!). My nonfiction reading this year has been dismally low ... so I'm thinking of making a list of 10 nonfiction books for Nov. & Dec. that I want to get to. I like making lists too, Lol. I think I will post my list on Sunday. So many nonfiction books lying around here that I haven't read. You have given me good impetus. I look forward to The Art Thief read soon. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteSusan, I loved the book by Andrew Cotter. I folow him on Instagram but I am hardly ever there. Even so it's cool to hear him chatting with his dogs. Hope you like The Story of a Heart, I loved that one.
DeleteAnother of my favorites, from a long time back, was the book Stir by Jessica Fechtor.
Yes, absolutely get a list together for your nonfiction goals! I alwasy join in with Shelleyrae at Book'd Out and she offers so many great suggestions there. Seems I am heavy with the bios and memoirs currently but I have started a list for next year.
That's a good amount of nonfiction! I remember when you read some of these.
ReplyDeleteJoy, it;s fast becoming one of my favorites for a good read.
DeleteAll of these look good. I've read The Art Thief and found it interesting and incredibly frustrating and I read Backyard Bird Chronicles. I wanted to like Backyard Bird Chronicles more than I did but I don't think I'm as interested in birds as I thought I was! I need to go through my reading list and see what nonfiction I've read in 2025. I think it's been a decent amount.
ReplyDeleteKatherine, you ought to make a post about your onfiction, I would be interested to read that. For next year I have in line the I.V. Drips and Rocket Ships and I look forward to that.
DeleteI am eager to read The Story of a Heart by Dr. Rachel Clarke now that you have shared it. It sounds like a book I will love!
ReplyDeleteI will try and see if I can add your link to the link-up.
Okay, I think I added you!
DeleteThank you, that was nice of you!
DeleteOf course!
DeleteThanks for sharing your year of nonfiction! I’ve read Dear Life by Rachel Clarke but must add The Story of a Heart to my list . I’m glad you’re enjoying the Nonfiction Reader Challenge.
ReplyDeleteHappy Nonfiction November
Shelleyrae, I am loving the challenge and get so many ideas from your posts. I will have to look for Dear Life now.
DeleteI read Hidden Libraries this year as well. I have read 35 nonfiction books this year and hope to complete 5 more. This is also my first time participating in Nonfiction November.
ReplyDeleteCindy, I thought Hidden Libraries was a great way for a book lover to armchair travel. That's a fantastic count of nonfiction for you!
DeleteYou read some great nonfiction this year. I'm glad we read Testament of Youth together, but it will not go down as one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteThanks, JoAnn. And I sure couldn't have gotten through Testament of Youth without it being a buddy read!
DeleteThe Art Thief looks so good! I just got on the wait list at the library.
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of Stanley Tucci's food books and shows, and I did enjoy What I Ate--not as good as Taste, but still fun to read.
Enjoyed Amy Tan's bird book. Also enjoyed Ina Garten's memoir.
I'm enjoying everyone's Nonfiction Nov posts--I may try to do one myself, just to review what I read NF this year.
Happy November!
Jane, I am reading The Art Thief on Kindle but Susan, who I am buddy reading with on this one, said the hardcover book has photos of the art so I requested that book from the library.
DeleteI agree, Taste was the better of the Tucci books. Good luck with compiling your book post. It takes some looking through the blog and my planner to get my titles.
