How many books do you have languishing on your shelves or your Kindle which you've owned for more than two years? I have plenty. So I ask myself, what inspired me to purchase them and when will I make time to read them....and then a few more titles distract me and it goes on and on.
As I was in a list making mood I noted a few titles I definitely want to make time for within the next 2 months. That's a good goal for me as I am still reading from The Classics Club, the 2026 Nonfiction Reading Challenge and some buddy reads.
Here they are, in no particular order, and I think I can manage these by mid March.
Within the Walled City by Virginia Evans
Nonfiction
Wild Ride: A Memoir of I'V. Drips and Rocket Ships by Hayley Arceneaux (thank you Katherine for bringing this one ot my attention)
A Time Remembered: American Women in Vietnam by Olga Gruhzit-Hoyt
Bush School by Peter O'Brien (thank you to Shelleyrae from alerting me to this one)
I think I will start with the Cecile Pin book about Vietnam refugees.
📚 Do you have a goal list of books you plan to read soon? 📚

Oh yeah... I could drown in all the unread books still languishing on my shelves here .... but for some reason I still keep getting more from the library. It is a good goal to read the shelf books. I am interested in the women in Vietnam book you pictured .... so hopefully you will vet that one for me. Enjoy your reads.
ReplyDeleteSusan, same here but I will say I donated many books when we made the house move last year. Still, I have decided between buddy reads and the Classic Club spin I am going to pick one off the shelf or Kindle.
DeleteI started Wandering Souls and it's quite engaging, sad as well.
Planning on the Vietnam book sometime in February. Will email you today!
Oh, wow! I didn't know Virginia Evans had a backlist! Adding Within the Walled City to my TBR list. I do hope to read more of the books on my shelves, focusing on the ones that have been there the longest. But my top shelf is full of Must Read NOW books, too. I need to spend less time on the computer and more time reading. Ta-ta!
ReplyDeleteLes, I'm not sure how I ran into that book, probably looking at Evans' profile and books on Goodreads. I have it on Kindle. Yesterday I started Wandering Souls and that's not a long book so I ought to be done in a few days.
DeleteMaking a list of possibilities, as JoAnn does on some of her posts, helped me narrow down the 6 books I mentioned here. I'm looking forward to starting the Tana book with you!
Within the Walled City definitely appeals to me--Siena, art, mystery. Ticks all the boxes.
ReplyDeleteBush School also is intrguing.
Yes, so many unread books languishing on the shelves. I do try to get to them, but I am so easily distracted.
Jane, I may start the Virgina Evans' book the first week of February. Let's see where I stand with the library books and due dates and then prioritize.
DeleteMaking a list for short term reading helped me focus instead of my usual - I need to read what I own. Thank you for the comment!
This is a great goal to focus on Tina (and you’ll knock a few off the Nonfiction Reader Challenge)
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
Thank you, Shelleyrae. I will finish Wandering Souls today and then start on one of these others. This is good for me to make short term goals!
DeleteI can't even remember the last time I really looked at the books on my Kindle - especially since I mostly read from the NetGalley section. I'll have to go through the shelf and pick a couple of books to read at some point. I'll be curious to see what you think of Hayley's book - especially with your experience on the adult side of things. It's not the best written but it does do a good job of telling the story and Hayley is so sweet. I'm sad she's moved out of day to day patient care and is doing more PR work. Good luck with your short term goals!
ReplyDeleteKatherine, I stopped NetGalley and now I try and read from shelves and the Kindle. So many books! Since I made this little goal I have finished Wandering Souls and am now reading Wild Ride. I like it. I knew as a mother you had a stressful time but reading what Hayley went through as a child at St Jude, I just can't imagine how her mom handled it. You did it, I am in awe.
DeleteAfter this I will probably read one of my library holds and then pick another from my list above.
Having short term goals, especially tbr lists, has worked well for me over the past couple of years and I hope it's helpful for you, too. I noticed the Virginia Evans novel on goodreads a few days ago, but I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere! I have a feeling since The Correspondent was so successful, they may try and publish some of her many earlier unpublished works.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, I feel like i must have lucked out buying that Kindle copy of Within the Walled City. I don't now why it isn't availble now. Just checked Thriftbooks and put it on my wish list so they will notify me when a copy is availble. Do you want me to email you when that happens?
DeleteYes, this short term goal list is working for me. I finished one of the books and now am reading a nonfiction. Next, library book gets a turn!
Thanks, Tina. That would be great!
DeleteExcellent goals. I'm glad this is working for you.
ReplyDeleteOver time, I've developed a reliance on the library so that I rarely purchase or procure books for physical shelves or on Kindle.
However, that didn't stop me from collecting hundreds of titles in my GoodReads TBR list. That go overwhelming, so I made some new rules for myself and started over at StoryGraph.
Now I keep my TBR at 50 books or less (I usually read somewhere between 40-50 books a year, so that's roughly a year's worth of reading). If I add a book that is the 51st book on the list, then I take another book off. That's helped me feel less overwhelmed and a bit more intentional in my reading goals.
That's a great idea, Joy. I have about 20+ pages of books on my to-read and go through it periodically to see if I still am interested. Over the years my tastes have changed - I used to readc about 80% mysteries and now I find I am reading more general or literary fiction and nonfiction.
