Here we are into the first week of July. We've had a few big storms blow in this past week and had hail one evening. The winds were so strong that day my wind chimes blew sideways and stayed vertical for a bit. I thought they may blow into my neighbor's yard, yikes. Welcome to the hurricane season and the almost daily summer rains.
Loki has had his Heartgard and Nexgard meds and I need to get the next 6 months worth from the vet now. The time passes so quickly. He is settling in nicely in our new home, probably helpful that much of our furniture was moved with us so...familar items and scents. Here he is napping by the CD shelves.
Let us get to bookish chat // I finished my Classics Club Spin and read Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay, review Here. I liked it and plan to find the version with the author's deleted final chapter.
Did a DNF on Niall Williams book The Time of the Child. Reviews are good for it and from the plot description I thought I'd love it. It was too lyrical and not enough dialogue for me. That said, I believe I am in the minority on not liking this one.
Currently reading The History of Sound by Ben Shattuck and enjoying it. This one I have not put down nor been distracted. I will look for more of his work.

Congrats on already finishing your classics spin! I'm currently listening to mine: https://wordsandpeace.com/2025/06/17/the-classics-club-what-i-got-for-the-classics-spin-41/
ReplyDeleteThank you, Emma. I hope you are enjoying your spin bok. I don't think I have ever read anything by Josephine Tey. For your Paris in July event I think I'll go for another classic on my list, A Moveable Feast.
DeleteMore later, but a quick thank you for the shout-out. If you want to see some of my favorite shows & movies, click on this link (which is in my sidebar as "Favorite TV Series") https://lesleysbooknook.blogspot.com/search/label/Favorite%20TV%20Series
ReplyDeleteLes, thank you I will certainly go check your sidebar out now. :-)
DeleteWe had a storm yesterday. Hasn't rained yet today but is supposed to start around 7pm.
ReplyDeleteI bet my grandson would love The History Of Sound.
Vicki, seems Florida always gives us rain in the summer months. I hope this storm brewing doesn't ruin any of the 4th of July plans for people,.
DeleteYep, Florida's rainy season is June to September.
DeleteI'm curious where you saw the Ben Shattuck book or how you came to read that one? I don't think I've heard of it. & congrats on getting your internet up & working and the TV. Loki looks happy and peaceful. :-)
ReplyDeleteSusan, the internet has been overwhelming yet amazing. We can straem music as well. I think I saw the Shattluck book in the free library publication called Book Page. It sounded appealing so I got it from the library Kindle loan section.
DeleteLoki looks very comfy stretched out on that sofa! Nice to see someone else still has CDs. I have so many, but very rarely listen to them. Our cars don't have players and when I'm in my office, I don't like to listen to music. I should put my Bose in the kitchen and listen while I"m cooking. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteSorry the hurricane season is upon you. We've had a lot of wind, but certainly not like what you're getting.
I tried The History of Sound on audio and didn't care for it. I wonder if the print edition is better. But once again, it's stories, which I'm not terribly fond of.
I need to see if Rod is interested in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Looks like a good cast!
Les, I am amzed at how well Loki has adjusted so quickly. We have been able to leave him alone for a few hours to grocery shop and go to the dentist and he's not made a mess at all.
DeleteWhen I started The History of Sound I thought it was one story but it is evidently many shorter stories. Not sure if they will converge at some point but I am almost done with the second story. I'm liking his writing style. But if you don't like short stories then I don't know if the print edition would be better.
Oh, we have loads of CDs and have starrted steaming them now too. Also, as old fashioned as it is, I will never get rid of my boom box!
We tend to get a storm most afternoons in summer here. Life along the Gulf Coast!
ReplyDeleteLove that photo of Loki!
Deb, that's the truth - the Gulf coast brings us much moisture!
DeleteIt's wonderful to have good internet access, isn't it? I highly recommend the Great British Baking Show. We ended up buying a year of BritBox for a bargain price, so we are enjoying that right now.
DeleteWas internet not available where you lived before or you just never really had a need for it? Just curious because I freak out if my internet goes out for 5 minutes because I'm like "I can't do anything!!!!" And then I remember I'm not in Arkansas anymore...I'm in L.A....so I can just switch over to Verizon Wireless. I'm not "stranded" without internet like I was in Arkansas. Hahahahahahahaha.
ReplyDeleteCuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute lil Loki!!!!!!
Jinjer, the interent was not available at all except by an expensive star link option and that wasn't even an option until the last 2 years or so. When we moved out there about 34 years ago it was very rural, no neighbor for 5 miles + and so when internet started being a thing - no one would run the cables or wiring out there. Not enough people to make it worth it so we only saw streaming when we stayed in hotels. Haha! For updates I would have to haul the tablets and phones to a coffee shop where they had high speed internet.
DeleteThere are so many steaming services so we are trying to decide which to subscribe besides Amazon Prime.
Wow! That is crazy!!! Well, I'm glad you have internet NOW and can enjoy all the streaming!!!!
DeleteIt's been great!!
DeleteWe loved The British Baking Show. We also enjoy watching American Ninja Warrior, The Amazing Race, Fixer to Fabulous and so many others. Enjoy your new shows!
ReplyDeleteCindy, I still haven't watched it as we are not subscribers to Netflix yet. My first and only episode was on a flight back from Omaha about bread making. Loved it! Thanks for the suggestions.
DeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteCongrats on internet! I'm pretty low-brow, and I think in part our TV is too old for some updates. A few streaming things just work on the kids' newer TVs, but I just watch lil Netflix movies. Watched The Electric State yesterday and found out it's based on a Swedish (?) book? Looks like pupper is settling in to the new place. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Becki. I will look for Electric State. Yes, Loki isn't having any trouble settling in...surprisingly.
DeleteCongrats on finishing the Classics Club Spin and on the internet! We had storms earlier in the week but this weekend has been really nice. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Yvonne. I think I'm going to read another one my Classics list for Paris in July event. Let's hope this upcoming hurricane season isn't a bad one!
DeleteI just watched the trailer of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare -- that looks interesting and fun for an action war movie.
ReplyDeleteJoy, we enjoyed it and they have a big star cast.
DeleteOh so many things to recommend!! British Baking Show def. MasterChef Australia is awesome, nothing like the American one. Let me know if you are interested, I can give you a "secret" internet link.
ReplyDeleteJackie, once we figure all this out I will probably ask you how yo link! We've never seen MasterChef.
DeleteYou would love Derry Girls!
ReplyDeleteThat one has been on my list and I had asked thd local library if they could borrow it. Nope. Not available from their lending vendor. I'll see if I can find it streaming.
DeleteWe liked that movie! Interesting about having to update your TV!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Marg, it needed 6 updates and took about 20 minutes. Now it's capable of streaming, etc. Crazy!
DeleteLoki looks so comfy there! 💙
ReplyDeleteHope you have a good week!
