I ended up behind this week in everything. Blogging, correspondence and the house is a tip.
Tuesday my husband had a dentist appointment and he was turned away because the blood pressure was something like 200/100 - stroke territory. He's on BP meds so next day we went to the primary care. New meds. There are other reasons for this but suffice it to say he ought to be back to "normal" much later in the year.
Thursday I had my annual opththalmologist appointment - cataract followup and pressure checks. Once I am dilated I am pretty much done for hours as to looking at a tablet or phone. Can't even read. Ugh. OK, old lady talk finished now. haha
Book chat
So....this week I finished Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. My third book for the Classics Club - review HERE. It was a tough read for me and thankfully I had JoAnn laboring along with me to complete a buddy read.
I also finished The Shepherd's Life by James Rebanks. Very much enjoyed hearing about fell farming life and reading Rebank's memoir.
Library acquisitions
The series Blue Lights, set in Belfast Ireland. It's been a while since we've watched a police drama and we are enjoying this one very much. It has six episodes per season. The tensions in northern Ireland are well represented.
Also plan to start Pastoral Song by James Rebanks, the secord book he has written about farming the fells in Cumbria.
Later today I hope to catch up on emails and do some visiting!

The book about the farm makes me think of my co-worker who lives in the part of L.A. that catches on fire every year so she and her husband have sold their house and purchased a hobby farm in North Carolina. She's packing as I type this. Not sure moving from fire country to hurricane land is a decent trade, but we'll see. I told her to let me know when she gets the mini donkey and I will come visit it.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a buddy to help you get through the tough classic!
Jinjer, I know a few people from work who had hobby farms. For what it's worth they loved it at first and then realzied they could never vacation without getting someone to feed all the animals. N.C. doesn't usually have bad hurricanes but Helene knocked them for a loop.
DeleteOh wow! So sorry to hear about your husband and hopefully the new meds and everything else keep those numbers down. I have high blood pressure in my family and a leaning towards it myself so it's always a bit scary. I love the look of Pastoral Song and have been wanting to read A Shepherd's Life. I love the idea of a farming life in the country though I'm not at all suited for it!
ReplyDeleteKatherine, I like reading about the farming life but it wouldn't be for me either. We talked about keeping chickens and decided it was too much responsibility. The feeding and care, the foxes and coyotes. Nope!
DeleteIf you have high BP run in your family you need to keep an eye on it for sure. There are so many meds out there now.
It's scary when blood pressure goes up. I hope the new meds work.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to have someone encouraging you on through a difficult classic.
Deb, I needed encouragement for that memoir and while I'm not sorry I read it, I would not recommend. The BP stuff appears to be handled for now!
DeleteSo sorry to hear about your husband's blood pressure, how scary. I hope the new meds get the BP back under control. I gather it might take a while to find out. And I hope that your eyes are doing well. No thx to that Brittain book right? Blue Lights looks pretty good and I will check to see if we can get it here. Hopefully this week will be better.
ReplyDeleteSusan, we just finished the Blue Lights season last night, it's only 6 episodes. Love it and can't wait for season 2. The library has it so I won't need to wait long.
DeleteDoug is on a combo of two different BP meds now and it's helping. Thanks for your kind thoughts! Emailing you later this morning :-)
These are all new to me. I may find copies of The Shepherd's Life and Pastoral Song.
ReplyDeleteVicki, it's about a farmers life and fell farming in northern England. I like reading about the area.
DeleteYikes! I am glad your husband’s elevated pressure was caught and treated. Hopefully his medications can be reduced later. I just read about your buddy with read JoAnn. Sounds like a Testament of Youth was both interesting and a slog.
ReplyDeleteOlivia, the Brittain book was slow going but had a few interesting parts. Thanks about the BP meds. He has been on 3 different ones prior and now has a combination of two. It;s hlping. Scary stuff!
DeleteWhat a week is right! I sure hope this week is off to a better start. Thanks again for reading with me... let's go back to Rosamunde Pilcher next time. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI hope the BP issues are sorted out sooner than later. Scary! Nice to have a buddy when the book is challenging. I hope you have a lovely week.
