Book Rambling

This week my reading time has been off as I've been up in the wee hours of the morning with a sick dog.  Which means a much needed nap was in order over several days.  Hoping to get things resolved so life goes back to my usual uneventful average.  The only book post I made was about Stanley Tucci's latest book here.

Anyway....on a visit to the library I saw the April issue of Book Page is out so picked that up. I found so many to add to my very long to-read list.

Here are a few that caught my attention.

I'm a fan of Ann Cleeves and see the first book in her Inspector Ramsay series, titled A Lesson in Dyingwill be released here soon.  Funny thing about that is it was first released in the U.K. in 1990. Thirty-five years later it's now available here.  I wonder why the huge gap in release for the U.S. as her other series such as Shetland and Vera have been available.

Birding to Change the World by Trish O'Kane looks like a perfect companion to the Amy Tan book I read recently.

Emma Donoghue is featured in an interview about her latest book The Paris Express.  She and was moving to the Paris neighborhood of Montparnassee  with her partner and she came across a photo of a 1895 train crash at the Montparnassee station.  After reading about it it inspired her to write a book.  It sounds like one I would enjoy.  The interview with this Dublin born author is interesting.

Rooms For Vanishing by Stuart Nadler is a family saga and I like those very much. This one is unique as it examines how some of the innocent dead of the Holocaust would have gone on to live their lives, had they not been killed.  It's apparently a nonlinear narrative and I bet emotionally charged.  It's a fat 464 pages and I will get to it much later in the year.

Has anyone read one of the titles I mentioned here?  There are many more in Book Page but these attracted me straight off.  I hope your week was filled with good books and happiness.

Sharing with Deb at Readerbuzz for Sunday Salon and Joy for British Isles Friday.

  1. That does seem odd that Ann Cleeves has a series that's being released so many years later. The cover is lovely!

    1. Joy, I thought so as well, regarding the release date of the novel here. Can't wait to get it as I like Cleeves style.

  2. I heard Emma Donohue speak in Houston, and I immediately put Paris Express on my list to read. I'm always interested in reading books about birding, so I'll look for that one.

I enjoyed doing the buddy read with you so much that I jumped at the chance to do a buddy read of A Tale of Two Cities starting next week. I hope this time I will make it through the whole book.

    1. Deb, I would enjoy going to an author event and I have the book currently in transit for me. Hoping to pick it up next week after I finish up the Rick Steves book.
Also happy to hear you enjoyed our buddy read and will be participating in another!

    1. Jinjer, it started with a twisted leg and the pain meds the vet gave us were too strong. I think I had a higher dosage than safe for his size and I learned this after called the after hours emergency vet center. He had me up at 11:30 p.m. and then again at 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. with diarrhea. Now he is on the mend, no meds and special canned food for the digestive tract for afew days. Thanks for asking!

    1. Becki, I look forward to the Rooms book as well. It is interestihng when you ponder what might have happened had someone survived.

  6. I read your comment to Jinger, so glad Loki is feeling better. I do not like it when my animals don't feel good!

    1. Thanks, Vicki. It was a harrowing few days and I was worried. If only he could talk and tell me what's hurting.

  8. Thanks for sharing these books. I don't think Book Page is available in Canada but it is online. I have read Emma Donoghue before (Pull of the Stars and Haven) but perhaps her Paris novel you mention might be better. I think she lives in Eastern Canada now. I have yet to read Ann Cleeves ... I'm not a big detective reader but I plan to read her nontheless sometime this year. I hope Loki is feeling better. I'm sorry he got the wrong dosage, argh. Enjoy your Sunday.

    1. Susan, I always forget about the publication online but I do enjoy flipping through a paper version now and then. I'll let you know when I get the Donoghue book and it will be my first by this author.
Loki is improving greatly now, thank goodness!

  10. Poor Loki! I hope he's feeling better today. And, I hope you were able to nap. I've never been much of a napper. There was a time when I'd come home from working at the bookstore and would sit in a comfy chair to read, ultimately falling asleep for a few minutes. But napping has never been my thing. I think I'm afraid it will mess with my nighttime sleep, which I struggle with every so often.

I got behind with my current book while we were on our little road trip to promote Rod's book at three events. I finally got back into the book last night, and read for well over an hour.

I spotted that new birding book at Roundabout Books last week when we were in Bend. I should have bought it! I did, however, buy a few books for my mom for her birthday and Mother's Day. :) Emma Donoghue's new book sounds intriguing, too.

    1. Les, he's doing better now and I am introducing solid food again. I don't mind a nap and feel refreshed afterwards. Doug can't nap well and he has trouble sleeping at night if he does nap. Alas.

      Will email you later!

  11. This magazine looks dangerous! That's crazy about the Ann Cleeves book. I wonder why there was such a long delay in publishing in the US. I do love a birding book so I will have to look for that one. Hope Loki is feeling better. Rover has a sensitive stomach and sometimes we have to go on a ground beef/rice diet for a day or two which normally fixes things but it's not fun until it does!

Hello Sunshine 🌞

Happy Saturday! We had rain for days on end, steady and solid without breaks.  It was no fun trying to get Loki out to do his business. Than...
