New books on my horizon

I am so glad I set a goal and joined the Twenty Books of Summer hosted by Cathy at 746 Books. It has made a huge difference in selecting my books.  I am doing fairly well on knocking out some titles which have been on my radar quite some time.

There are new titles coming out from authors I have previously enjoyed so they are added to my list.  Hoping to get to those sooner than later.

Trust Her by Flynn Berry.  I previously enjoyed Northern SpyA Double Life and Under the Harrow so this one will make my summer reading list.

This Strange Eventful History by Claire Messud is Messud's latest and I'm hoping to get a copy and fit it in before August ends.  My introduction to her work was The Woman Upstairs.

I am almost finished with Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane and like the writing style so much that I purchased The Walking People.

As the daily heat index is usually above 100 degrees, I am getting more reading time in.  This is just a short update.  Hope things are well in your part of the world.

Sharing with Deb at Readerbuzz for Sunday Salon.

  1. These are all new to me books, I may add The Walking People to my list after reading your review. I was thinking about going from 20 to 15 because of my arm but I decided to just go for the 20 and not worrying about reaching that goal. Good luck reaching your goal!

    1. Vikci, I just finsihed Ask Again, Yes and I liked it very much. Hoping the book I bought will be as good. If you need to drop your book count then you ought to while you heal. Hope that arm is getting better!

  2. I like having a goal. It helps me do a little more than I thought I could. And I like setting a goal that I can probably meet if I set my mind to it---not too easy, but not too hard.

Goodreads says I haven't read Claire Messud, but I think that's wrong. I think I remember reading The Emperor's Children. If I did, I didn't write a review of it, and I didn't put it down on my list. Thanks for sharing this author and Mary Beth Keane with us.

    1. Deb, I usually have a book goal and I like the structure. The Mary Beth Keane book was excellent, IMO. I think it compares to Claire Lombardo and Ann Napolitano books, Hello Beautiful and The Most Fun We Ever Had.

  3. I've only read Under the Harrow, which I enjoyed, so I'll have to try more of Berry's books.

The Woman Upstairs is a popular read and your Good Reads review has convinced me that I need to read it!

I'll be eager to hear your thoughts on The Walking People. Loved Ask Again, Yes.

    Stay cool!!

    1. Les, I hope you enjoy those authors if you try their work. Oh, I just finsihed Ask Again, Yes and loved it. Nice tribute to James Joyce from Ulysses with the title:

“And then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will yes.”

  4. It sounds like your summer list is going well. Yay. I should've chosen 10 instead of 15, lol. Little bit behind the 8 ball. I have read all of Flynn Berry's as well. So I might as well keep it going. I'll be interested to see what you think of the new Messud novel. Enjoy your reads. And stay cool, somehow .. in the A/C. We could hit near 100 on Weds ... which might be a record here. Hope you get some rain ...

    1. Thank you, Susan. I am glad a made that list as I pass by the books on the shelf and think, later - now I grab one off the list :-) Thanks also for alerting me to Flynn Berry's new book. I didn't know a new one was until yu wrote about it on your blog. I may like Northern Spy the best but her other books keep me invested.

  5. I'm hoping to read Claire Messud's new book within the next couple of months, too... really love her writing! Ask Again, Yes was a 5-star read for me, but I hadn't heard of The Walking People. It sounds good. My daughter left me a copy of her most recent novel, The Half Moon, and Fever looks pretty good, too.

  7. I'm so glad having a reading list / goal is helping you to crank out some books! Especially when it is too dang hot to do anything else but sit in front of the AC and read!

  8. It is miserable outside right now so staying inside reading is definitely the way to go! I haven't read Claire Messud but I have The Woman Upstairs on my TBR and I know I have a book or two by Flynn Berry on my TBR as well.
