He had lived outside all his life and was just this side of feral. The local Humane Society grabbed him up from a Bainbridge Georgia shelter because they were going to put him to sleep. He was afraid of everything and everyone and did not attempt to engage anyone walking through the kennel trying to adopt.
He was a challenge as he had to be housebroken, tried to bite us multiple times and had food insecurity so he'd knock over trashcans and make a huge mess.
Fast forward and he is a relatively happy dog. He has separation anxiety and takes Xanax when needed (such as any trip to the vet) but he is a very intelligent dog, loves us and enjoys a good life now.
Happy birthday, Loki!
He got a new kitchen bed
He rolled around outside in the sun for bit.
What a wonderful story! It is good to know that care and love can help a dog become a happier creature in this difficult world.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Deb. He was a challenge the first few weeks but just goes to show, if you are patient there's usually a good dog waiting to trust and be part of the family.
DeleteLove this. Loki is so loved now. That smile on his new bed! My pup was also rescued at the age of five months. A young girl driving through Palmdale gave her up. She was only there for a couple of days and at first we didn't see her but after another walk through she came inside the kennel, she has been sunning outside and that was it. Almost 16 now but in her end stage of life.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ti, rescue dogs are the best! I know she had a great life with you. It is the end satge that breaks our hearts.
DeleteAw, you guys have given Loki a very nice life and he appears to be a happy dog! Happy gotcha day, Loki!
ReplyDeleteLes, he knows he's got it good for sure! I felt bad for him, what he must have endured before getting away from that situation.
DeleteI thought I commented on this yesterday but I must not have. Tell Loki Happy Belated Birthday and that he's looking very handsome. Give him a belly rub for me please!
ReplyDeleteVicki, he's been enjoying his week and I'll give him pets from you!
DeleteLoki is one lucky pup! He looks so happy... you two have been so good to him!
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, he is definitely liv6 the good life now!
DeleteWhat a wonderful heartwarming story!! You two saved his life and made him so happy. And I can tell in these photos that his life has completely turned around. I almost get weepy thinking someone was treating him so poorly and he was almost was put to sleep for no reason. Ugh it just kills me. Why would someone do that. We are dog people. We think Willow was kept in an outdoor caged small fence area her first year of life before we saw and got her. She is no longer fenced or caged!
ReplyDeleteSusan, he lived outside and had no medical care so it's a wonder he didn;t have heartworm. When we first got him and tried to take him outside at night to pee, he was terrified because he thought we were putting him out for the night. He was a challenge!
DeleteI am sorry to hear Willow had a bad beginning too. Once we get them, they live the good life. I know Willow must love having free range to roam,
Awww happy birthday, Loki!!! We love you so much!!! I have a vague memory of a rescue dog going camping or RV-ing right after he got adopted and his people weren't sure if he was going to work out or not. Was that you guys and Loki or am I thinking of another recue dog?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jinjer. That may have been us as we did have a RV when we got him. We are the kind of people who would never adopt and return. That said, they lied about Loki & didn't tell us he was near feral, he bit Doug twice and had many issues. Obviously we worked through it!
DeleteYay! Happy birthday to Loki. I remember the challenges you had early on and he's come so far. Love that last picture!
